Online tools allow searches by party name or case number, and for older materials, it is advisable to contact the clerk in person or by mail.

Windham Court System & Jurisdictions

Connecticut has a unified court system, so there are no separate district or magistrate courts in the classical sense in Windham County. Instead, divisions of the Connecticut Judicial Branch operate here.

Superior Court — Judicial District of Windham

This is the main court of general jurisdiction. It handles:

  • Criminal cases — from misdemeanors to felonies
  • Civil claims without a monetary limit
  • Family matters: divorce, child custody, alimony, protective orders
  • Traffic violations
  • Housing matters

The court is located in Willimantic, which is the administrative center of the county.

Windham Probate Court

The Probate Court operates separately from the Superior Court and deals with:

  • Decedent estates
  • Trusts and conservatorships, guardianships
  • Name changes
  • Voluntary and involuntary hospitalizations

Information about Windham Probate Court can be found on the website, and case searches can be conducted through the Case Lookup system on the Connecticut Probate Courts portal. Data is available from January 5, 2011, for decedent estates and trusts.

Small claims cases (up to $5,000) are also handled by the Superior Court. There is no separate small claims court in the state.

Windham Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings

The schedule of Superior Court sessions is published through the Connecticut Judicial Branch system. To find out which cases are scheduled for today, tomorrow, or during the week, use the official court calendar portal at jud.ct.gov/crdockets.

How to find the necessary session:

  1. Go to the Court Dockets portal of the Judicial Branch
  2. Select Judicial District — Windham
  3. Specify the date or date range
  4. If necessary, specify the type of case: criminal, civil, family

For the Probate Court, the hearing schedule can be clarified directly at Connecticut Probate Courts or by calling the office. The probate hearing calendar is not always published online — sometimes you will need to call the clerk.

Information about criminal records is maintained by the State Police or the Judicial Branch. If you are interested in the status of an inmate, use the inmate search of the Department of Correction.

How to Get a Copy of a Windham Court Document

You can obtain a copy of a court document in three ways: online, in person, or by mail. The type of copy — certified or ordinary — determines the cost and procedure.

Certified Copies

Required for official purposes: submission to another court, immigration procedures, confirmation of legal status. The clerk affixes the court seal and signature. You can order:

  • In person — at the Superior Court clerk's office in Willimantic
  • By mail — by sending a written request specifying the case number, party names, and type of document

Uncertified Copies

Suitable for review. They can often be printed from a public terminal in the courthouse.

For divorces: The Vital Records Office does not keep copies of divorce decrees. Contact the clerk's office of the court that issued the decision directly.
