Windham Marriage Records Search

In Connecticut, marriage records are maintained at the municipal level, not the county level. Each Town Clerk registers marriage licenses issued within their town. For the towns within Windham County—such as Windham, Willimantic, Putnam, Danielson, and others—the marriage licenses and certificates are kept by the respective Town Clerk. Centralized copies after 1897 are also held by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, Office of Vital Records.

The collection of records includes:

  • Marriage licenses issued in the municipality
  • Marriage certificates filed after the ceremony
  • Historical records dating back to the founding of each town

For older records, especially prior to 1897, contact the Town Clerk of the respective town directly or the Connecticut Probate Courts, which sometimes hold related documents.

Order Marriage Certificates Online or In Person in Windham

There are three main ways to obtain a copy of a marriage certificate.

Online

The Connecticut Department of Public Health offers ordering certified copies through the third-party portal VitalChek. To do this:

  1. Visit the Vital Records page on the DPH website.
  2. Select the online order option and follow the instructions.
  3. Prepare a valid ID and credit card information — VitalChek charges an additional service fee over the standard $20.

Also, check if your town's Town Clerk accepts online requests — some municipalities in Windham County have their own electronic forms.

In Person

Visit the Town Clerk of the town where the license was issued. Bring:

  • A valid photo ID
  • Payment — cash, check, or money order (confirm acceptable forms of payment in advance)
